The other day, Joel Osteen shared one of the best messages I’ve ever heard. He said a thermometer is influenced by the temperature in the room, but a thermostat influences the temperature.
That really resonated with a situation we’re having at one of my businesses: gossip, that insidious, invisible poison that can literally destroy people.
It’s easy to go with the flow, compromise, and do what everyone else is doing. Maybe everyone at work or at school is gossiping in the back room and you feel like joining in because you’re afraid you won’t have any friends if you don’t. Don’t do it! Don’t sink to their level. Don’t be a thermometer, influenced by everyone around you. Make up your mind to be the thermostat. Do what you know in your heart is right. Don’t be influenced. Be an influencer! Eventually people will see your backbone and notice you. They’ll see that you don’t gossip or stoop to their level. When you refuse to compromise, you’ll stand above the rest. Keep taking the high road and you’ll eventually be promoted to a higher level of leadership.
